Day 3 by Kelly Yau

Thursday morning started early at 6:30am and the majority of students had the joy of waking up to Mr Smith banging on their door and shouting in a voice far too enthusiastic for the hour it was! My arms and legs were still aching from the 10 hours of skiing we did from the previous two days. However, we quickly roused when words spread that it had snowed in the night and when we rushed to the balcony and opened the curtains, we were greeted with a view of untouched snow, breathtaking white mountains and clear skies.

Once we were all up and out of our pyjamas into our ski gear, we headed over to have breakfast. As always, there was a wide selection of delicious food including cereals, muffins, potatoes and fruits. We all definitely needed the energy for what was going to be our third and last day on the Cannon Mountains!

It was -9 degrees outside today and that meant the full attire of thermals (top and bottom), fleeces (multiple in this case), ski trousers, ski coats, gloves, goggles and hats. Then, when I was too padded up to be able to reach my feet-it was time to put on the ski boots! At about 9am, we met our ski instructors and made our way over to the mountains. Today was definitely the best day to ski as the fresh layer of fluffy light snow made it easier to slide and control (at least that’s what I thought). In my beginners group of skiing, we began by going on a variety of green slopes including the Gremlin and Fox Tail, where we tested out our newly learnt technique of parallel skiing. As the day progressed, we went higher up the mountains onto the blue slopes where it was slightly steeper and more challenging. Many funny events happened here and the highlights included:

  • Maddy veering off the path and crashing into the fence
  • Callum’s ski poles went flying and got stuck in the fence
  • Me losing control and falling off the ski chair
  • Miss Vales whizzing down the slopes showing off her skills as I watched in awe

It was another fun day on the slopes!

After skiing, we returned to our resort where we had 45 minutes to shower and get ready for dinner. Tonight we surprisingly had Chinese cuisine with noodles, rice and chicken, which was a nice change. Then, we headed off to our next activity which was the cinemas! When we arrived at Lincoln Cinema, there were a variety of films to choose from including John Wick, Shazam, 65, Dungeons Dragons and Cocaine Bear. We chose to watch Dungeons Dragons.

I am now back at the lodge where I exhaustedly fall into the silky bed sheets, the moment I have been longing for all day.
